Through your Prison

Through your prison, Son of God, must freedom come to us; your cell is the throne of grace, the sanctuary of all the righteous; for it you had not undergone servitude, our slavery would have been eternal.

  1. Dear Father Predmore,

The movie, Social Network, was shown at the Jesuit high school this week in a fundraiser. I have no idea whether younger siblings and friends went. The Council of Catholic Bishops has rated the movie "Adults Only." Are Jesuit institutions exempt from the ratings of the Catholic bishops?
Are there compelling reasons to show this movie to adolescents at a Jesuit school during this Holy season of Lent, a week before Holy Week?
When a parent says "no" to an adolescent to viewing a movie, getting a Facebook account or whatever, sometimes the no is a "yes" to God. Ignatian educators need to support parents in the saying the "yes". I wonder whether there is an iphone app for the Bishops movie ratings. What compelling reason does a Jesuit school have to go against the Bishop rating? Say you are a parent, would you want this movie at your children's school? What age at your home? What about it would you want students at a Catholic school to behold? Thank-you for your wisdom and insight.

  2. Dear Anonymous,

The best answer I can give you is to direct you to the school officials who are the best people to answer your questions. Bring them your concerns and listen to their explanations. I'm in no position to offer a possible answer on their behalf - either theoretically or practically. The best way to find out the information you want is to ask the person who made the decision.
